About this Session
In some way, shape, or form, the tech we use daily, the tech we design with and for, is tethered directly to the ground we stand on. And the thing is, while technologies come and go, the ground beneath us always has a story. Maybe even the ultimate story. So, in this session, we’ll take a detour through millions and billions of years of Planet Earth to look at some of the weird and wonderful things you can find.
I’ve been obsessed with rocks, minerals, and fossils since I was a kid. I followed that through to studying glaciers and ancient rivers. Then, making TV shows about the natural world. Even though I work with design and strategy these days, I’ll always be a rock doc, too. I’ll bring along a selection of favourite specimens from my own collection. From weird minerals to ancient fossils, I’ll talk about how they came into being and how the planet builds things, balancing form and function…and the unimaginable, slow crawl of deep time with the sudden rush of chaos.
We’ll take a moment to see the world a little differently. Oh, and if you happen to have a strange stone, a beach-find, or a fossil cluttering up your desk at home, bring it along! Catch me in the breaks, and I’ll try my best to help you figure out exactly what it is and what secrets it’s holding. There's always a story in every chunk of stone.
